Modern automotive ECUs contain far more information than can be accessed through standard vehicle communication networks alone. During software development and calibration, engineers often require direct access to processor memory to observe internal variables, modify calibration values, validate software changes, and program new firmware.
The A8 Serial ECU Interface was developed specifically for these applications. By communicating through the ECU's native debug interface, the A8 provides fast, reliable access to memory regions used during calibration, high-speed data acquisition, flashing, and rapid prototyping.
Available in USB and Ethernet variants, the A8 integrates naturally into ATI VISION Calibration and Data Acquisition Software while supporting ASAM XCP communication for organizations using multiple software environments.

Why Use a Serial ECU Interface?
Vehicle networks such as CAN are designed primarily for communication between electronic control units. During development, however, engineers frequently need visibility into internal processor variables that are not available over normal vehicle communication channels.
A serial ECU interface communicates directly with the processor's debug port, providing access to calibration data, internal variables, and memory regions required for software development and validation.
By providing this direct connection, the A8 helps engineers move more efficiently between calibration, measurement, and flashing activities throughout the development process.

Why A8
Faster ECU Development
Calibration engineers need immediate access to ECU variables without sacrificing acquisition performance. The A8 is designed to communicate directly with ECU memory, enabling high-speed calibration, flashing, and measurement from a single interface.
Eliminate Multiple Development Tools
Rather than switching between separate hardware for calibration, flashing, and data acquisition, the A8 combines these capabilities into one platform. This simplifies bench setups, reduces hardware complexity, and streamlines development workflows from initial software bring-up through validation.
Work Where the Vehicle Is
Whether connected directly to a development bench through USB or communicating across an Ethernet connection up to 50 meters away, the A8 provides the flexibility to support laboratory, dyno, HIL, and in-vehicle testing environments.
Keep Data Synchronized
When paired with ATI VISION software, the A8 supports synchronized ECU calibration and measurement, helping engineers correlate calibration changes with acquired data more efficiently during testing.

Built for High-Speed Communication
Automotive software development often requires transferring large amounts of ECU data while maintaining synchronization between calibration changes and measured variables.
The A8 is designed to support these demanding workflows through high-speed communication and dynamic data acquisition capabilities.
Rather than simply maximizing communication speed, these capabilities help engineers validate software changes more efficiently while reducing delays during calibration sessions.
Flexible Connectivity
Every development environment is different. Some applications benefit from a direct USB connection at the engineer's workstation, while others require longer cable runs between the ECU and the development computer.
The A8 is available in both USB and Ethernet variants to support these different installation requirements.
Intelligent Development Features
Dynamic Overlay Support
The A8 supports dynamic overlays that allow calibration memory to exceed available emulation memory. This enables tool-controlled initialization of calibration data while eliminating the need to modify ECU software solely for calibration purposes.
Intelligent Flash Programming
Repeated flash programming is a routine part of ECU development. The A8 incorporates intelligent flashing features that help streamline this process by:
-
Optimizing flash programming operations
-
Protecting reserved memory regions
-
Managing memory checksums for improved synchronization
-
Supporting built-in brain dead flashing
These capabilities help reduce programming time while maintaining reliable communication throughout software development.
Supported ECU Platforms
The A8 supports many commonly used automotive processor families through their respective debug interfaces.
Additional processor support may be available. ATI recommends contacting its sales team for specific processor compatibility.
Integrated with ATI VISION
The A8 is designed to work directly with ATI VISION Calibration and Data Acquisition Software (version 3.7.3 or later), allowing engineers to configure hardware, perform calibration, collect synchronized measurement data, and validate software changes within a unified development environment.
Support for the ASAM XCP communication protocol also allows integration with compatible third-party applications when required.
